Preview: TM404 back on Kontra-Musik!

You know that warm feeling of anticipation, standing on a platform waiting for the train to bring a loved one home to you? That’s what a new Tilliander record is like for Kontra-Musik. After releasing the monumental Chill Out album under Andreas’ Mokira moniker, we took a rather different approach this time, opting for the White Label. Even though the title ’Endor’ has nothing to do with the Ewok-inhabited Forest Moon in the Star Wars saga, it’s still a decisively green and verdant track, filled with all the sounds of a dense forest. ’Trico’ is the quiet lake deep within this forest; a serene spot inhabited with dragonflies, great white pelicans and slinky salamanders that curiously look a bit like Richie Hawtin during his Moby era. We simply love this place and hope that you will too.

Andreas Tilliander released his first album as Mokira at the very turn of the Millennium on
almighty Raster Noton. 11 years later, the latest Mokira album Time Axis Manipulation was
issued on Ulf Erikssons Kontra-Musik and now it’s time to pick up where we left off with ‘Chill
Out’.
There’s an air of happy retrospect and light solemnity surrounding the new album –
enhanced by the fact that it marks Kontra-Musik’s 50th release. With ‘Chill Out’, Mokira attempts to bring back the dreamlike state from those magical late nights of his youth spent in front of MTV’s Chill Out Zone; to go back to his ambient roots using contemporary techniques and perspectives.
The result? Well, imagine Lee Scratch Perry and KLF enjoying an episode of Stranger Things on a crappy vintage TV after being hard at work burying old tape recordings in Perry’s tropical garden. Imagine them sitting together totally at peace in a big, cosy sofa while a heavy haze is building up in the room, pleasantly affecting the eerie images on the screen. We always knew Kontra-Musik’s 50th release had to be something quite out of the ordinary.
As expected, Mokira didn’t disappoint us one bit.

A quick introduction: Kontra-Musik

A quick introduction: Kontra-Musik

RBMA: “How would you describe the music that you release to someone that hasn’t heard of Kontra-Musik?”
Ulf Eriksson: “That is hard. Maybe a mess?”

This is not the only interview where Ulf describes his label Kontra-Musik or the philosophy behind it as “a mess”. But reading ‘mess’ as ‘something without restraints’ it makes then pretty much sense as definition for the label’s music approach, moving between “elegant Techno, true-school house and ambient textures “ (RBMA).

What is for sure beyond discussion: a Kontra track never messes up a dj-set. Which might also be the reason why Kontra-Musik was featured as label of the month by Resident Advisor.

Say Hallå to Ulf!

There is no need for a big introduction to Ulf’s oeuvre and his person. But in case you wanted to tune in a bit deeper into his music we ran for you through his past mixes and ... we really don’t know which one to choose from: podcasts for Smoke Machine, Modyfier, Boiler Room, Latency on Rinse FM, mnml ssgs or Input Selector or his Live-Sets with his brother in crime Sebastian Mullaert … all made with same constant quality and feeling for tension.

But here we go, check his recent mix for Germany’s Groove Magazine.

Ulf Eriksson joins VVA

Välkommen they say in Sweden, and that’s what we say to this kontrarian from Malmö:

Ulf Eriksson
(Kontra-Musik / Intonal)

Maybe it’s the cold winter months or these never-ending days in summer. Whatever the case may be, it might explain why ‘restlessness’ comes into our mind when we speak about Ulf: a brilliant selector playing all over the globe, head of notorious Kontra-Musik, programmer at Inkonst and curator of Intonal Festival in his hometown Malmö… things definitively never get boring with Mr. Eriksson.

Välkommen Ulf!
